GANGLION CYST overview

A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous lump that typically forms on the joints or tendons of the wrists, hands, or feet. They are filled with a thick, clear, jelly-like fluid, and can range in size from a pea to a golf ball.

Causes: The cause of ganglion cysts is not entirely clear, but they are thought to develop as a result of injury or repetitive stress to the affected area. They are more common in women than men, and often affect people between the ages of 20 and 40.

Ganglion cysts are usually painless, but they can cause discomfort or aching, especially when they are located near a nerve. Treatment options include observation, aspiration (removal of the fluid with a needle), or surgery. However, in many cases, ganglion cysts will go away on their own without any treatment

Treatment

The 2 main treatment options for a ganglion cyst are: draining fluid out of the cyst with a needle and syringe (aspiration) cutting the cyst out using surgery.
